The Big Island, Hawaii

The state of Hawaii is the only U. S. state made up entirely of islands. It consists of hundreds of islands spread over 1,500 miles (2,400 km).

My previous posts on our 1987 Hawaiian honeymoon featured the island of Oahu. With this post, we are moving to the island of Hawaii, which is the largest and which is often called "The Big Island" to avoid confusion with the state as a whole.

Kahuna Falls

I don't know what these orange flowers are called, but they're beautiful.

Akaka Falls

Again, no clue what these pink flowers are.

Sorry, don't know this one either.

  1. Gosh, these are awesome! Then you ended with that tangerine sunset. I'd love to visit there someday. A photographer's dream destination for sure. :)

  5. Wow! I think I would like to visit the Big Island even more than visit Oahu. Those waterfalls are gorgeous. I really like your sunset picture as well.

  6. Gail - I know you'd love it. And I'd love to see it through your lens. :)

Ruth - Like I told Gail...I know you'd love it, and your skills with a camera would make the trip worthwhile.

Theresa - As you can tell from the photo, we were on a high hill, looking down at that black sand beach. It would have taken more effort than we were willing to expend to get down to the beach itself. Some people do, though.

Betsy - I thought of you and George when I came across those old waterfall pictures. My photos don't do them justice, but I suspect yours would.

George - It doesn't have to be an "either/or" proposition. Each of the islands has something different to offer. Oahu has its marvelous beaches and the Polynesian Cultural Center. The Big Island has Volcanoes National Park, rain forest and waterfalls, desert and grassland...such a variety. You might consider a cruise that includes several of the islands. Then you wouldn't be packing up and moving all the time.

  7. I guess there is no need to know all the names of the flowers, Linda, their beauty makes up for the lack of knowledge. :)

The greenery surrounding the Kahuna Falls is stunning, don't you think so?
