Palmer Chapel

The isolated Cataloochee Valley, once one of the largest and most prosperous settlements in what is now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, is nestled among some of the most rugged mountains in the southeastern United States. Some 1,200 people once lived in this lovely mountain valley before it became a part of the national park.

Cataloochee is the best place in the park to see historic frame buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I'm sharing just one of them here. It's Palmer Chapel Methodist Church. The photos are from our trip to the Smokies during the first week of November, 2013.

  5. Amazing to think how many families were living in this gorgeous area. It is the most visited of the National parks.

  8. It's a sweet little church. Reminds me of one near here, even the interior looks similar. Such a peaceful, idyllic setting for a church. :)

  12. It's a lovely building, Linda, I like its style. It looks somewhat lonely in that space nowadays, doesn't it? I wonder what it might have looked like when people were seated in the benches, praying and singing...

We love the Cataloochee area ---and the Palmer Chapel. Did you see any elk in November when you were there??? I want to go back again in Sept/Oct to hear the elk during the mating season.

  16. Hi, Linda,
That is one of Dave and my favorite places to visit. To sit in Palmer Chapel and think of 1200 people living in the Cataloochee Valley and some of them worshipping our precious Lord in a worship service is such a blessing. It must have been hard for them to leave such an outstanding place God created - "The Great Smoky Mountains"
