The isolated Cataloochee Valley, once one of the largest and most prosperous settlements in what is now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, is nestled among some of the most rugged mountains in the southeastern United States. Some 1,200 people once lived in this lovely mountain valley before it became a part of the national park.
Cataloochee is the best place in the park to see historic frame buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
I'm sharing just one of them here. It's Palmer Chapel Methodist Church. The photos are from our trip to the Smokies during the first week of November, 2013.
What a beautiful, simple and delightful chapel, Linda! Your first photo offers a gorgeous background for it, too!
ReplyDeleteyou could link this to InSPIREd Sunday this saturday. i love seeing inside. so cute. & very quaint. ( :
ReplyDeletewhat a neat, pristine little building.
ReplyDeleteReally nice photos, Linda. I love the one of the inside, too.
ReplyDeleteAmazing to think how many families were living in this gorgeous area. It is the most visited of the National parks.
ReplyDeleteYou got some beautiful pictures of this chapel. We've visited it a couple of times when we were at Cataloochee. Thanks for the memories.
ReplyDeleteSO lovely and peaceful....
ReplyDeleteSuch a picturesque spot. Thanks for sharing your pictures.
ReplyDeleteIt's a sweet little church. Reminds me of one near here, even the interior looks similar. Such a peaceful, idyllic setting for a church. :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this chapel....I wish I could hop in my car and find a back road to it!:)
ReplyDeleteLovely piece of history. The first photo is my favorite. Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cute. It would be the perfect spot for a small wedding.
ReplyDeleteIt's a lovely building, Linda, I like its style. It looks somewhat lonely in that space nowadays, doesn't it? I wonder what it might have looked like when people were seated in the benches, praying and singing...
ReplyDeleteWhat a quaint little chapel. I love the perspective taken inside.
ReplyDeleteHi There, We are home from George's fabulous birthday trip. I will blog about it tomorrow. It was truly a trip we will be talking about for a VERY long time!!!!
ReplyDeleteWe love the Cataloochee area ---and the Palmer Chapel. Did you see any elk in November when you were there??? I want to go back again in Sept/Oct to hear the elk during the mating season.
Hugs,
Betsy
Beauty and history combined. We loved our visit and intend to return someday....:)
ReplyDeleteHi, Linda,
ReplyDeleteThat is one of Dave and my favorite places to visit. To sit in Palmer Chapel and think of 1200 people living in the Cataloochee Valley and some of them worshipping our precious Lord in a worship service is such a blessing. It must have been hard for them to leave such an outstanding place God created - "The Great Smoky Mountains"
Love those kinds of chapels. And very pretty with the leaves.
ReplyDeleteI love old Churches like this.
ReplyDeleteA gorgeous and quiet place. Great photographs too. I like the low angle on the third image.
