Canyonlands-Island In The Sky

On Friday, October 12, 2018, we spent the day touring Canyonlands National Park, Island in the Sky district. We have visited and documented this park before, so I won't try to include pictures of everything we saw, just some that are representative of the park.

A short hike leads to Mesa Arch, a must-see feature of Canyonlands. You may have seen photos of this arch on calendars or even as a Windows wallpaper, but those photos were always taken at just the right moment of a sunrise. It would be a glorious sight to see. Unfortunately, sunrise occurs way to early for me to make it to Mesa Arch to experience it.

The above collage shows Mesa Arch and the view through it, as well as the view from a scenic overlook a few feet to the side of the arch. (If you want to see these individual images in their full size, just click on the collage. That will take you to the album where they're stored.)

Our first stop of the day had been at Shafer Canyon, and it was also our last stop of the day. I liked the late-afternoon lighting better, so that's the image that I chose for the blog.

The next day, we toured Canyonlands National Park, the Needles District. Stay tuned.

    1. Thanks, Dianna. As I've said before, God does the hard part. I just press a shutter release. Doug and I went on a diet at the end of the year, so there's a little less of us now...and what is left is better looking. :)

  6. Well, I can just add a few more oh and ah... while I am trying to imagine that vast space! :)

    1. The vast spaces of some of our western states do take some getting used to, Petra! And the "ohs" and "ahs" are a common reaction. :)

  7. Oh how we loved Canyonlands. I saw a picture (not ours) of the sunrise coming up in the middle of Mesa Arch.. Wouldn't it be neat to be there at sunrise????

Great pictures--especially of the two of you. Tripod (like we do)????

Your weather was perfect for some terrific shots.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

    1. It WOULD be neat to be there for sunrise, Betsy; but I might be a little cranky after getting up early and hiking to the arch in the pre-dawn darkness only to be frustrated in my photographic attempts by inconsiderate people who wanted to pose for just the right photo before relinquishing their spot in front of the arch.

The pictures of the two of us were taken by a couple of kind volunteers we met along the way. We have used the tripod when in more remote places, though.
