Dragonflies and a Little Fisherman

After a month of heavy rains and the arrival of summer temperatures at last, the dragonflies are out in abundance at Ouabache State Park. Please feel free to share your knowledge if you can identify any of them. (I really need to get a book!)

This is a photo from June, 2014, during my non-blogging year.

All of the rest of the images are from last week:

These two were attached. Hanky panky was suspected.

Another pair that had been attached only moments before

Late in the afternoon, a pair of humans showed up. The small one had received the fishing rod as a birthday gift last week, and this was the first chance that Dad had had to take him to the park to try it out.

  4. I'm sorry I can't help you identify the dragonflies, but I do know you got beautiful photos of them. The picture of the father and son fishermen is cute.

  5. Your photos are stunning! I love to watch dragonflies but can never get them to pose for a picture. Great job!

  6. Beautiful shots of the dragonflies! I think the second one is a Halloween Pennant. The blue one might be an Eastern Pondhawk, but not sure. Dad and son fishing together is so sweet. :)

  7. Thanks, Tex. The "little cutie" wasn't feeling very well that night, and it didn't help that he didn't catch anything. But his dad was so loving and patient with him that it was fun to watch them together.

Ruth - Thank you so much for the kind words.

Linda - Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed the photos.

    Thank you, George.

Aisling - Dragonflies can be challenging to photograph. I've found, though, that they'll often return to a perch, even after initially flying away when I approach. So, if I stay quietly in position, I often get the shot I want.

Gail - Thanks for the ID. I have since purchased "Stokes Beginner's Guide to Dragonflies" and confirmed the Halloween Pennant ID. And I think you're right about the last one's being an Eastern Pondhawk. But I think the second-to-the-last one is a Blue Dasher.

  8. Linda, I love the dragonflies with those red and brown wings, they look wonderful, and the little boy is cute, holding his fishing rod and looking at his dad.

    1. Petra, according to my new book, that one is a Halloween Pennant. It's a male, and the lighter-colored one that's attached to it in the 2nd and 3rd shots is a female. I'm learning that there are countless varieties, sizes, and colors of dragonflies and damselflies. I tried to send the dad a copy of the picture of him and his son fishing, but the email didn't go through. I must have written the address down incorrectly.
