Little Blue Heron

There seemed to be a fairly large population of Little Blue Herons at Fred Howard Beach in Florida last month. Regretfully, none of my photos do them justice; but I wanted to share them here anyway. At the end of the post is a very short video that Doug shot with our camcorder.

This photo shows the blue color better than the others. The neck is sort of purplish.

This image was taken from the camcorder video.

  6. I enjoyed both the photos and the video. I can imagine how difficult it was to get a good shot of that blue heron against the water.

  7. Oh, I love the little blue. I didn't know the youngsters were white until last year when I came upon a large group of nesters. The fourth shot really shows off the midnight blue color (which IS hard to capture) and those lime green legs. I really enjoyed the video. He looked about ready to strike, then changed his mind. The way herons hunt with such focus and intensity is fascinating and fun to watch. :)

  14. Love these photos and the video of the heron. I'm struck by how skinny its legs are for the size of its body. They must be very strong.

  15. It's interesting to see the difference between thy young and adult birds, both stages are very elegant and charming. You've captured the blue shade very well, the photos are lovely.

  16. It's amazing how big those feet are.. to balance that odd body atop of those skinny legs. These guys kind of remind me of a cross between the Great Blue and the Green which to me, has a lot of that reddish purple in it also. Fine pics.
