Gates, Horses, and a Few Mules

After our reunion with Betty in Dubois on September 19, we continued our drive toward the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone.

Following are photos of a couple of gates that we saw along the way:

No identification on this one.

Dunoir Valley Retreat

I'd never heard of the Dunoir Valley Retreat until I saw the name on this gate. Curious, I looked it up on the internet. It's a reasonably priced vacation rental. Click here for more information.

After we'd driven awhile, we saw a sign for the Tie-Hack Memorial at the side of the road, with some steps leading up to the top of a small hill. Well, we were ready to stretch our legs by then so we went up the hill to take a look.

A plaque on the memorial reads: "Erected to perpetuate the memory of the hardy woods and river men who made and delivered the cross ties for the building and maintenance of the Chicago and North Western Railway in this western country."

The real treat, however, was the view from the top of the hill:

As we stood admiring the above view, a bunch of horses suddenly emerged from the brush, running along the river in single file.

These two stopped for a drink after passing the hill where we stood.

I took this close-up shot off the video that Doug recorded.

Soon, more horses came running by:

This bunch included a few mules. One took issue with the horse behind for following too closely.

Here's a closer look at the action.

And then this rider showed up, and we realized he was what had put the horses in motion.

What a gift we were given when we decided to climb that hill!

  2. Hi Linda Love the second shot with the mountains in the back ground and the ranch through the gate arch. Yes that was great you walked up the hill. Magnificent shot and those horses are fantastic. Am a bit frustrated this morning as I cannot get onto my old blog to put today's post on!!!!!! I am working on my mini Ipad which is not easy to answer your post but as I have a video to put on, I need my computer. Hope it improves.

  8. Oh my, those horses are really gorgeous! That was a blessing to see. The fence in the first photo is really cool, I think. I like old fences, and this one looks like links of a chain if you don't look too close. Nifty. Have a great day.

  11. let's see... first, love the gates! that heavy duty cross bar on the first must have taken some engineering to erect. love the way you framed the building with the second gate. :) second, really like that they used railroad crossties in the memorial itself. third, the horses and mules being driven are just GORGEOUS!!! truly an old-west scene hardly anyone gets to witness!!! thanks for sharing all of this!

  12. Hi Linda! I have always loved to see those gates to ranches. I always wonder where the ranch is! And what kind of life is going on in there. I am so curious about that kind of stuff.

Those horses were magnificent. And your photos were amazing! Especially the action shots. Nature is such a wonder, and it fills me with awe for God's creation. Just beautiful.

  13. I was thinking this looked like paradise for a horse, although they could probably do without the rider.
