Winged Things

Here are a few more photos from recent visits to Ouabache State Park.

One of several Canada Geese who were enjoying splashing in the small lake.

An Eastern Amberwing Dragonfly, in flight.

I don't know the ID of this dragonfly, but I was intrigued by the green nose and mouth.
(Thanks to Hilary for identifying this as a male Eastern Pondhawk.)

This image lacks sharpness, but it gives a little better look at that face.

Twelve-spotted Dragonfly

Eastern Amberwing Dragonfly on Daisy Fleabane Plant

This turquoise damselfly is also on a daisy fleabane plant. It gives a little perspective as to how tiny this damselfly is.

  1. Absolutely beautiful, Linda! Thank you so much for sharing these glorious captures! I love Canada geese. Thus far I have been unable to capture a dragonfly, they are too fast. :)

    1. Thanks, Linda. You're very kind. The picture of the dragonfly in flight was...well...a lucky shot. As you said, they're very fast. The trick with most pictures of dragonflies is to wait and see where they land. Even if they flit away from that spot, the chances are that they will return to it. So just position yourself for a shot and wait for them to come back. Sometimes it doesn't work. But lots of times it does.

    1. Thanks kindly, Montanagirl. I was pretty surprised to get that in-flight shot myself. There were several of those little guys flying around, off shore a little ways, and pretty much buzzing around one small area. I did a little continuous shooting, and this was the only one that was in relatively good focus.

  8. Amazing pictures. I don't seem to have a lot of luck with dragonflies, one reason might be because I don't pursue them too diligently.I also have not seen very many this year.

  10. These are wonderful, Linda. I have yet to capture a dragonfly in flight.. fantastic shot! The blue one with the green bits appears to be a male Eastern pondhawk. The females are green.

  12. Lovely photos, Linda, it's not easy to catch in detail these little creatures. I'll never cease to be enchanted by damselflies and dragonflies, their colours and wings and all the body structure look great.

  13. These close-ups take forever to shoot and one has to be very patient. And I usually lack one of the two. :) But hat's off to you. These are great looking.
