Wildflowers and Waterfalls in the Smokies

On Tuesday, May 7, we drove to the Tremont area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and hiked a little way up the Middle Prong Trail. The following pictures are some scenes from that day.

A yellow wildflower, growing on the riverbank

I loved the blue in this one.

I just liked the way the light was hitting these leaves.

I thought these looked like little brides. (Update: This flower is a Showy Orchis.)

This waterfall is usually just a trickle of water flowing down from the hillside next to Tremont Road.

  1. All lovely but the colours of the flowers just pop so beautifully. The ones you see as brides, I see as white hummingbirds drinking from purple flowers.

  2. Such beautiful flowers! Those waterfalls put the ones I saw in Mississippi to shame. The three-tiered one is really something. You guys certainly know how to take a vacation.

  3. Thanks for taking me outdoors this morning, even if it is only vicariously. The flowers look like gems.

  5. You were in the Smokies at a great time for both the flowers and the waterfalls. It's been a while since we hiked Middle Prong trail -- we're going to have to do it again soon.

  6. Looks like you were in the Smokies at the perfect time of year. The wildflowers are gorgeous --and so are the waterfalls. We've been to the Tremont area when there was alot of water also --and it's awesome, isn't it????

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  7. Hilary - Thanks, my friend. I'm glad you enjoyed the wildflowers. I still see a bride in the top center flower, but I can grant you some hummingbirds in the others. :)

Gail - The Smokies had received high rainfall before we arrived, so the waterfalls were especially lovely on this trip. Give Mississippi another chance someday after they've had some rain. :)

Stephen - Glad to have you join us on our virtual hike.

    Thanks kindly, Theresa.

George - We really hit it perfectly for seeing the waterfalls. We missed the redbuds and most of the dogwoods, but there were enough wildflowers to satisfy us.

Betsy - I think it did work out that way, after we had to postpone our trip twice due to illness. The Tremont area is one of our favorites, too.

  10. Lovely falls and flowers, Linda, I especially like the lit leaves, it's a beautiful capture.

As for the flowers, I know just the first one, I guess it's the Creeping Buttercup or at least it belongs to the buttercups family. We have plenty of them here.

    1. Thank you, Petra. You're the only one to comment on the leaves, but I was pleased with that picture, too.

  11. Hello Linda, I am a first time visitor from another blog site and enjoyed the nature photos. The yellow wildflower looks like a buttercup and the blue ones could be blue eyed grass or asiatic day flower. We took a brief trip to the Great Smokey Mtns last fall and wish we had more time.

    1. Beatrice - Welcome and thanks for stopping by! Thanks also for the information on the flowers. We love the Smokies and usually spend a week there in the spring and another week in the fall. Next time, you'll have to plan to stay longer. :)
