Continuing Day 2 in the Smokies...Hiking Middle Prong Trail

Continuing the account of Day 2 in the Smokies, featured in the last post...

After our drive down the five-mile Tremont road, which ends at the trailhead for Middle Prong Trail, we enjoyed a "picnic" lunch in our vehicle before beginning a short hike up the trail. The day was overcast, but the rain held off until we finished our hike.

The river from the bridge that marks the beginning of the trail

Some of the beautiful fall foliage remaining on the trees

The trail follows the river. These trees on the opposite shore caught my eye.

A look back down the trail, where Doug was busily shooting video.

A small waterfall just off the trail

A multi-level cascade just upstream from the previous waterfall

I loved the way this red tree was virtually the only spot of color in this bit of woods.

Hope you enjoyed this little hike with us. This is a great trail for an easy hike. The incline is gentle, and the scenery is beautiful. If you're ever visiting the Smokies, put this on your list of things to do.

  4. Oh yes,I have enjoyed walking with you. The scenery is gorgeous and your company as you describe each scene is great. Now if only we could do this in person. Have great day.

  5. We enjoy that hike also, Linda ---and like you two, we don't enjoy crowds. SO--this one is a great one to hike....

I love LATE Fall in the Smokies. There's still color --but Winter is coming... Love your photos.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  6. What an absolutely beautiful spot. A fair bit of colour still remained. I can only imagine how amazing it must be in the height of autumn.

  8. Oh my word. What beautiful shots. I took a similar shot like your red tree, except mine was a patch of red leaves flanked by spanish moss on both sides, so the red really stood out. Can't wait to post it, but it pales in comparison to yours. Y'all certainly find the prettiest places to hike.

  9. Stephen - Glad you enjoyed it. And I'll bet you didn't even get out of breath. :)

Petra - Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed our virtual hike. :)

Theresa - I agree. Those last trees to lose their leaves put on quite a show among their bare neighbors.

Ruth - What fun that would be to take a photographic walk together in person. Meanwhile, thanks for joining us on this virtual hike.

Betsy - We like late fall, too. We like peak color season, but lodging is so expensive during that time. And, as you say, the crowds take some of the enjoyment out of it. Besides, the trees that hold their color past the peak deserve to have someone enjoying them. :)

Hilary - It's a sight to see during peak colors, that's for sure. But these late colors are definitely still beautiful.

Diane - Thanks, kindly. Maybe we should make a date for next spring. :)

Gail - Thanks for the kind words. There's no way one of your photos would ever "pale in comparison" to one of mine. But it's sweet of you to say so.

    1. George, those hikes along the rivers are just very pleasant...pretty and not too steep. I wonder if we've ever passed on one of them before we became acquainted. :)
