An Assortment

It seems that weather extremes are the order of the day lately. Last month was the wettest May in the recorded history of our area. About a week ago, we had rainfall in excess of four inches in one day. During a break between storms, around sunset, the sun broke through, and I was able to capture a couple of photographs.

We could see both ends of the rainbow, but it was so large that I couldn't get it all in the picture. This end was the brighter of the two, so that's the one I went for.

The clouds were pretty in the glow of sunset.

During my walk at the reservoir yesterday, I took this quick shot of an Amish girl and a team of draft horses working in a neighboring field.

This lovely mallard was hanging around with some of the geese at the reservoir.

This beauty was in a flower bed near the entrance to the reservoir.

  3. I like the kid plowing, i have a lot of Amish around me.I haven't seen many rainbows with all this rain.I planted a dozen shrubs the other day in damp earth and they have been watered well since.

  4. Thanks, Elizabeth. The Amish present so many wonderful photo ops, but they don't like having their pictures taken. So I usually oblige. But I thought I could sneak this one without being noticed.

    Thanks so much, Ruth.

Thanks, Steve. God is doing a pretty good job of handling the watering this spring, isn't He?

  5. Why is Blogger not allowing me to post comments as myself?????? This is the second one this morning, and I can't seem to get through.

Ah well, I do love your photos, especially the Amish girl. I hope she didn't see you getting that shot! And the rainbow is great - weird sky color makes it all the more intriguing!

    Okay, let's try this again...

  6. Ethelmae - Thank you. I hope, too, that the Amish girl didn't see me take that picture. The path around the reservoir is on a hill, so I was looking down at the field; and I had to zoom and crop the photo to get that "close" to her. Hopefully, I got away with it and didn't offend her.

  8. I love the plow photo.. that's just such a rare find and the sunlight is so rich and saturated in that image. Nicely done.

The rainbow and clouds are wonderful too. Fleeting moments in time captured by your lens. I won't tell the Amish girl.

Somewhere in a photo album, I have a photo of my older son when he was about 14 months old. He was sitting in a buggy, up front with the driver - an old Mennonite man who was waiting for his wife to finish grocery shopping. He invited Jeffrey into his buggy and even offered to pose for a photo. I was very surprised, knowing how they felt about having their images taken, but very pleased.

  9. You're so sweet, Hilary, to find nice things to say about my humble photographs. What a kind thing for that Mennonite man to do, inviting Jeffrey to sit with him in his buggy and allowing you to document the event with a photograph. I really do try to respect the wishes of the Amish by not getting their faces in the photos. The girl in the photo in this post just happened to turn her face a bit toward the camera as I snapped the shot. I would have tried again for a faceless shot, but that would have been too obvious and called attention to what I was doing.
