Douglas Dam overlook, of course, is not part of Smoky Mountain National Park. But it's an easy drive from Pigeon Forge and a pleasant place to spend a relaxing afternoon. I know that you and your husband have both undergone cataract surgeries recently, and that that's what you probably think of when you see the name for Cataract Falls. Actually, no matter how you look at the name for this waterfall, it doesn't fit. "Cataract" usually refers to a large waterfall, and this one definitely isn't large. When we're hiking in the park, I think about the people who used to live there. Life had to have been hard for them. But it was home.Linda at To Behold The Beautyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07419060763634934217noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9031302234429148594.post-30170951389624001852017-03-24T15:14:46.186-04:002017-03-24T15:14:46.186-04:00Lovely post, Linda. (I've always wished the falls had a different name, but nobody asked me about it, lol.) You're absolutely right, with the park's 522,427 acres, and the burned area covering around 17,000 acres, there's still plenty to see and do in the Smokies. I just love hearing the names of the cabins in the park. Of course, Ogle is an Irish surname, and I remember during my childhood that most phone books in Tennessee read like one from Ireland and Scotland since the majority of early settlers were of Scots-Irish decent. Those immigrants supposedly felt at home in the hills and valleys of our state as it reminded them of their native lands. But, oh my, have things have changed...
Have a great weekend!
Toni
magnoliasnteahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08517995125207145961noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9031302234429148594.post-86256391192256398552017-03-24T02:47:53.099-04:002017-03-24T02:47:53.099-04:00Thank you, Steve.
